If On a Winter’s Night … (2009)

Sting’s best records show off how well he blends genres into unique, memorable songs. If on a Winter’s Night… isn’t that. It falls short on excitement and engagement, and it never really recovers.

From start to finish, the album feels slow, plodding, and seemingly endless. It’s mostly traditional folk songs and holiday standards, and a lot of it comes off uninspired. Sting’s voice is still impressive, but the arrangements and production don’t have the depth or complexity you expect from him. The tracks blend together to the point where it’s hard to tell one from the next.

That lack of energy is a letdown, especially given his track record. In fairness, this record was never really trying to excite you in the first place. But there still isn’t enough interesting music here to hold your attention. If you’re a fan of traditional folk and holiday music, it might land for you. For everyone else, it doesn’t deliver the creativity we’ve come to expect from Sting.
